On the Farm

OUR DOUBLE RAINBOW

If you recall I mentioned our new road surface last issue. Dressing off our lane continues but I just had a chance to get some photos together. The night before we began the roadwork it rained with a heavy shower and gave us this beautiful double rainbow. This is the first time I can remember seeing a rainbow stretch from one part of the farm to another. The left photo is the treeline in A1 in front of our neighbors just past the market and the right photo is the old barns along the lane. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. It was a spectacular treat for us especially since it was so vibrant and all on our farm.

Well, a full day trip down to Silver Seed Greenhouses in Nanticoke Md on the Eastern shore. Out at 5am and back on farm by 7pm with an hour to load up. I have a Chevy Venture van and with the shelves that I made out of plywood and disc harrow spools for spacers I managed to transport 111flats of plants. We were amazed!

At this writing the cabbage, lettuce, and kale is in. We planted Alcosa, Tendersweet, and Red Express. The Champion collards are in as well.

Laurie and Matt Harelick came to the farm on Sunday PM and helped plant some of the cabbage. I think they were pleased with what they did and definitely worn out. I also got the irrigation in the cabbage field [KG this year] and the next morning everything was looking great!

Today we are planting lettuce: Marin, Galactic, Salad bowl, Red Salad bowl, Magenta,Red Cross, Jericho, and Outredgeous. We had fun! So far the work is before us and with all there is to do it makes for a sprint to get everything in. Of course, with the mild weather we had since I've been back with the plants we have had frost every night.

I did bring up some warmer season plants and hope that with row covers we'll be able to get some of them in ahead of time. With good fortune I expect to have everything planted by the week's end. If anyone has a desire to help plant now's the time. WE do a lot of hand planting because I farm predominantly at a human scale, not a big tractor mechanized field consumptive size. There is always work to go around not to mention the various projects that are awaiting enough bodies to keep moving.

Time is growing short for subscriptions. Please let your friends know and for those who have not renewed yet the time is here.
