Animal Tracks

I was driving back to the farm and noticed this spider on the windshield.I was on this stretch of road. Pretty impressive for the spider to hang onto glass at that rate of speed. Insects never cease to amaze me. I was checking the electric fence this morning because the charger was showing a short and there hiding in plain sight was a 5 inch long praying mantis hanging out on a fence post. It's been in the mid-twenties and there in a rather exposed location is an insect. I always thought that they froze when it was freezing. It just goes to show us that there are different degrees of the word freezing!

The cows are beginning to look like they are growing winter coats and I think it is late but they are doing fine. The pigs are energetic as ever but hanging in the shelter today in the rain.

Our mail box tree and the sumac in fall raimentAmong the daily chores, a pleasure really, is walking my children to the bus stop at the end of our lane. For those who havent visited the farm yet you might be interested to know that the lane is 1/4 mile long. So a trip to the mailboxes or bus stop is a half mile walk. I have the distinct pleasure of hearing and observing the birds along the lane as I walk down and back. The population changes with the seasons. As well as the birds there are every kind of animal that I've seen on the lane over the course of time. From a mink, and the fox that caught it to bears, frogs, turtles and the list goes on. Last night the woodcocks were hanging along the road side and it is always fun to watch their seemingly erratic flight but I'm certain they always get where they are going. It has warmed to above 50 degrees overnight last night and the birds seemed very busy and chirpy this morning. This time of year with wide swings of change in the weather I always wonder how the critters manage. I am sure that winter is a great winnower in nature to seperate those that can survive from those who wont. Buffalo has emerged from it's two feet of snow and my sister reports that they have just now gotten power back since it went out last Thursday. Talk about dramatic change of weather. Bad enough that we went from 70 degree days to 26 degree nights. I can wait for snow.
