WE've
seen quite a few of the high flocks of geese continue heading
south this week. For the first time ever I saw a lone duck
flying with a flock of geese and keeping in formation. I really
had to look twice but there was no mistaking it. It was a
small flock of geese numbering about 40 and so the lone duck
was very obvious.
Eagle
overhead
This young eagle flew over the office and I can tell you
that it looked much bigger in person than here. They are really
a beautiful creature. I was standing in the driveway here
speaking with visitors and some movement caught my eye. I
looked closer and found this intrepid little snapping turtle
marching along towards the upper meadow. I hung on to him
for a few days to share with the visiting Bloomfield students
and then set him free in the meadow. Several years back Alexander
made a pet of one and kept it in a terrarium for two years
I think. They are neat critters.
Blacksnake
shed full length by door
These snakes we found in A9 which is my highest field. The
day after I found the first I saw the snake in the field and
then found the second skin in another part of the same field.
They are beautiful snakes. Known for their territorial nature
in keeping other snakes out of their vicinity as well as being
predators primarily of rodents they are favorites of mine.
The image at left is of the two skins tacked to a board leaning
up against the entry door to the office to give you an idea
of length.
