The
salamanders are still at it on their crossing the road trek.
This is the most common type we see although there are a few
others. I haven't had the camera along when they are out.
Osprey
headed south along the river
It is great to look up and see the birds headed to their
winter grounds. I've seen a few high flocks but not the usual
traffic so I think that we'll be seeing more in the next few
weeks. These two photos I took of two out of three osprey
that were headed south along the river. They were way up and
circling lazily on the generally southward drift of air. I
couldn't get all of them in the same shot but did manage these
and a few more blurry photos.
The pigs are already getting bigger
and have really taken to their pen as you can see in the photos
at 'On The Farm' they've pretty much excavated this spot and
next week I'll be moving them to the next stage.
The cows are going through their early
fall rotation and are cleaning up the pasture like they are
starving.
Charles
& Queen mother practicing coordinated scratching
Here is the latest photo of Charles Earl of Stroganoff who
is One year old this month. He hasn't missed any meals you
can be sure. I'm impressed with his size and expect that he
will prove an outstanding herd bull. They are waiting for
their ration of pears and loud about it as well.
In other on farm animal new news, yesterday was the first
visit from a black squirrel. What a beautiful animal that
is! I have read that the settlers predominantly hunted the
black squirrels because they were much larger than the greys.
Over time of course, from this selecting the black squirrels
were almost hunted to extinction and the grey squirrels became
predominant. We are now seeing more and more of the black
squirrels although they are generally much smaller than the
greys. Time will show if there are those who still have somewhere
hidden the traits for size that I've read about.
