Animal Tracks

The seasons have begun to change. When there is heat or water or other stress the trees that are stressed begin to change color. Here the trees in the meadow always begin to turn first. The night hawks seem to be more abundant this year than ever before because I

am seeing more of them since the large flock has flown. OF course the bugs are aplenty and that is what night hawks eat. Walking across the lawn in the fog this morning I was overflown by a bat. Bats normally can be expected to stay around into October but most often are gone by Halloween. I did some cleaning of the bee hives and set out the old and messy comb to be cleaned up. Quite a show that is! I set the super and comb on the front sidewalk of the office and the cloud of bees convinced most everyone to use the other entrances. I shot a very short video and the sound alone is really neat!

The cows are moving through late summer pasture and have finished their meadow rotation. I don't like to keep them in the meadows when it is this wet but doing so was unavoidable this time. They grazed the pasture down in fine style and are now in the upper field. Our now lingering pigeon hawk has eaten about half a dozen of Alexis' chicks and we are all on hawk watch. IT is really incredible to watch one of these hawks pursuing a bird on the wing! Last Sunday on my way to the Pleasantdale distribution, passing Ross' Corner here in Augusta I saw a pigeon hawk chasing a small bird. IT was really intense seeing the hawk right on that birds tail and watching the bird maneuver to escape; flashing, darting sprint in a mad dash to the tree line.
