Animal Tracks

Not all animals like the heat. It is definitely 'dog days' time. The humidity and heat are crushing. Of course the cicadas are singing away and this is a sound of summers that evokes memories of sitting on the screened in porch and playing pinochle or monopoly. Of course that was really only one or two summers but it was my most favorite recollection. Life changed for me after those summers. The birds are a bit subdued during the day time but we have a birdhouse just under the porch eaves here

that has a family of wrens who have just hatched. I like wrens. They are plucky, even feisty little birds and voracious insect eaters. The parent birds bob and chatter at the cats who lounge around the porch or are sleeping on the wood pile. Come to think of it, for all the birds that the cats have gotten over the years I can only remember one that was a wren.

This morning I saw a pair of Scarlet Tanagers chasing a robin in the upper canopy of the woods margin along field A3. Really neat to see the flash of color zipping along against the green backdrop of the trees. This is the time of year when we try to sit out in the evening to cool off. Our air conditioning is the few fans that are pulling air through the house and open windows so sitting out in the evening is to be preferred. We generally last until the bugs get obnoxious and just as the bats begin to dine. They really are amazing fliers! We have quite a few that like to live under the fascia in the various buildings. I don't chase them out because that keeps them eating near the house at least when they are coming and going. I tried to get a photo of a bat and you can imagine how futile that has been. Just as well though, by dark it's either office work or bed depending on the urgency for either.
